How do you conduct a user interview?

  1. Ask about their life not about your idea
  2. Ask about past specifics not generics or hypotheticals
  3. Shut up as much as possible and count to 4 before speaking

Good questions: "Why does this matter to you?" "How do you solve this problem currently?" "When was the last time you did X? Walk me through that"

Bad questions: "Would you buy this for X dollars?"

If nothing else, avoid talking about your idea as much as possible and instead talk about their life related to the problem your idea solves.

If you hear a compliment, which is something you want to say "thank you to" that's a red flag you should avoid

If you get feature requests, dig into what they want to use that feature for, maybe there's an easier solution. DO NOT just write it down and move on

If you get generic answers, dig into specifics of the last time that generic happened. Same if you hear any sort of powerful emotion. Dig don't move on.

Try to push for commitment as a measure of the truth behind how important a problem really is to them. Commitments can be small. But they are real investments of time, reputation, or money. If you don't get that or hard facts on the customer's life then you had a failed meeting.

You'll ask different questions to different customers. Plan out the top 3
